You just won't want to be dealing with big Lightroom libraries in 16GB of RAM or less– the change to Apple Silicon really doesn't magically change this in spite of what some people said early on.

Any of the computers that have an M1 (not Pro/Max/Ultra) support only 16GB of RAM so the existing Mini and iMac are out, leaving the 14/16" MacBook Pro and the Mac Studio as your option. Of course, if you just want a new computer then that's fine too. The 2017 27" iMac can support up to 64GB.

Is it the disk? If the computer isn't using an SSD then that's an inexpensive fix if it's RAM, you can upgrade the RAM on a 2017 17" iMac easily at home. You want to understand what your bottlenecks are before you buy a new computer. That changes things a bit but the same questions apply. I can't imagine that 3D modeling, even at the basic geometric shapes level that I plan to use, would be very enjoyable. I suppose the slicers I use may not be optimized for OSX (is that still a thing?). Lychee (resin printer slicer) can be a huge dog when it has to recalculate supports when you adjust the orientation of a model. Lightroom is laggy (possibly a consequence of the giant library). Failing that, your only appreciable upgrade that makes sense would be an M1 Ultra Studio, which is pricey and would then require that you find a 5K or higher monitor to avoid a downstep in visual quality compared to what you're running now.įill us in, OP - what specifications is your iMac running, and where are you having trouble?Īh-ha, the Hive Mind delivers again! This is NOT a 2017 Pro, just a 2017 27" Retina with a 3.4 GHz i5 and 40 (not 32GB) RAM. You may want to consider upping the RAM in your iMac to 64GB+ if the current configuration is starting to pinch. If you have a high core count, the Max isn't going to massively outstrip it, and the Vega graphics will trade blows with the Max's GPU for most work. I started to write a response but then stepped away for breakfast, and this kinda nails it. If it's the high end 18 core iMac Pro and the current machine struggles with tasks that benefit from multi-core performance, the M1 Ultra is a huge jump in performance but the M1 Max will be pretty similar. I'm not sure that there really is a clear upgrade from an iMac Pro just yet.ĭepends on which iMac Pro I suppose. I think you need to start by identifying where the "struggle" happens. My 2017 27” iMac Pro with 32GB RAM is starting struggle. I’m willing to pay a mild premium for a longer upgrade cycle but don’t want to spend money for a better computer when a simpler one would suffice. Thanks for any perspective y’all can offer. The Studio Max is clearly the best machine, but is it too much? Or is it a better performance deal for the price of a monitor? I think the mini is better internals than an iMac, and opens $900 for a monitor at an equivalent price to the iMac. If I posit 16GB RAM and a 1TB internal as a baseline, $2100 gets me an iMac, $1299 gets a mini, or $2200 a Studio Max (w/ 32GB). I’d have to get a third party monitor, as enticing as a Studio Display is.

I don’t know how to evaluate how an M1 mini with 8 or 16GB compares to my current 32GB or if a Studio Max with 32GB is necessary and worth the additional cost. M1 Max is exciting but likely overkill, but is a mini sufficient for a few years? I’d opt for an iMac if they offered larger screens, but maybe maybe there better performance/value in a mini or even Studio. I understand that upgrades are no longer a thing and I don’t know how to evaluate what I need. I haven’t been tracking M1 hardware at all and am confused by the new RAM situation. I’m moving into FDM printing too and will have to introduce some basic 3d modeling software at some point.įor the last 20 years I’ve tended towards a maxed out iMac (ie semi-future proofed) every 5 years or so.

It’s got an easy life, challenged only by browsers full of tabs, Photoshop Lightroom with 130,000 photo catalog, and some 3D printer slicers (Chitubox and Lychee).
